About this grant

Bloomberg Philanthropies supports clean energy growth to address carbon pollution that worsens health outcomes including asthma, increases the frequency of extreme fires and floods, and imposes rising economic costs on communities worldwide. The programme recognizes that cheaper, emissions-free renewable alternatives are available and can drive job growth and strengthen local economies with support from local, national, and business leaders. Since 2011 in the U.S. and globally since 2017, Bloomberg Philanthropies has partnered with organizations in the United States, the European Union, and 32 other countries on research and technical assistance to accelerate the shift to cleaner, more resilient energy. The programme includes two major initiatives: Beyond Carbon, launched in 2019 with an initial $500 million commitment (with an additional $500 million committed in 2023), which is one of the largest philanthropic efforts to transition to clean energy in the U.S. and has helped save over 55,000 lives, prevented nearly 77,500 heart attacks, and saved billions in healthcare costs. Beyond Petrochemicals, launched in September 2022, addresses petrochemicals and plastics as major sources of pollution contaminating air, water, and soil, and helps turbocharge work to halt the rapid expansion of petrochemical and plastic pollution in the United States.
