Electric mobility funding
Grants, contracts, and procurement for EVs, charging infrastructure, electric trucks, buses, and 2-wheelers.
EV funding has split into three distinct tracks. (1) Vehicle manufacturing, IRA 30D / 45W credits in the US, UK Automotive Transformation Fund, EU Innovation Fund, these are large but mostly for incumbents and tier-1 suppliers. (2) Charging infrastructure, NEVI ($5bn US, fully obligated), UK Rapid Charging Fund, EU AFIR + CEF Transport, plus a long tail of local-authority procurement. (3) Earlier-stage R&D for next-gen batteries, charging tech, and heavy-duty applications, ARPA-E, Innovate UK Faraday, Horizon Cluster 5, Vinnova FFI.
For startups, the most accessible non-dilutive money is at the application layer (fleet electrification, depot charging, V2G platforms) and on novel hardware (megawatt charging, battery-swap, 2-wheeler ecosystems in low-income markets). Heavy-duty electrification (e-trucks, e-buses) is where corporate offtake and public procurement increasingly anchor commercial scale-up.

Frequently asked
Are there grants for EV charging operators, or just for the hardware?▾
Both. NEVI funds operators directly (state-level deployment). UK Rapid Charging Fund covers infrastructure upgrade costs. EU CEF Transport funds cross-border corridor deployment. Operator-side grants are typically capex-only, they pay for sites and hardware but don't cover opex or revenue gaps.
Does heavy-duty electrification (e-trucks, e-buses) get different funding than light-duty EVs?▾
Yes, different programmes and usually larger cheques. Look for: DOE SuperTruck 3 (US), Innovate UK Zero Emission HGV Demonstrator (UK), EU Horizon Heavy Duty calls, EBRD Green Cities (LATAM/EMEA). Bus electrification has its own funding pool via UK ZEBRA, US FTA Low-No, and EU Clean Vehicles Directive procurement.
Can two-wheeler / micromobility / battery-swap startups apply to these programmes?▾
In Europe and the US, micromobility tends to land in smart-city or sustainable-transport calls rather than EV-specific ones (Horizon Cluster 5, US DOT SMART). In Africa and South Asia, dedicated programmes exist via MDB e-mobility windows (AfDB, ADB) and DFI partners, these are some of the most active funding sources for 2-wheeler electrification globally.
How do US IRA credits stack with federal EV grants?▾
The 30D consumer credit, 45W commercial vehicle credit, and 30C charging credit all stack with most federal grants, but they reduce the grant's cost basis. The 45X manufacturing credit is direct-pay and doesn't reduce basis. Read the cost-share clauses on each call; mistakes here usually cost 5–15% of the award value.
