Energy storage funding
Grants and procurement contracts for battery, long-duration, and grid-scale storage.
Energy storage funding has bifurcated. Short-duration (lithium-ion, 1–4 hr) is now largely commercial, funded via utility procurement, IRA tax credits in the US, and capacity-market contracts in the UK and EU. Non-dilutive grants concentrate on the harder problems: long-duration (>10 hr), grid-forming inverters, and non-lithium chemistries.
The largest pots for early-stage storage are DOE OCED, DOE Loan Programs Office, EU Innovation Fund (medium-scale), UKRI Longer Duration Energy Storage Demonstration, and a growing set of Japanese and Korean industrial decarbonization programmes. Foundation funding is thinner here than in carbon removal, this is a sector where government and utilities are the buyers.

Frequently asked
What counts as "long-duration" for grant eligibility?▾
Most programmes draw the line at 10 hours of discharge at rated power. UKRI LODES uses 6+ hours; DOE Long Duration Storage Shot targets 10+. If your tech sits at 4–6 hours you may be more competitive in shorter-duration programmes.
Are there grants for stationary storage software (EMS, optimisation)?▾
Yes but narrower. Software-only plays usually land in climate-software-data programmes (Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, Innovate UK Smart Grants, EU Horizon). Hardware-coupled software pilots can apply for storage-specific funds, depends on whether the call requires capex deployment.
How does the US Inflation Reduction Act interact with storage grants?▾
IRA Section 48E (ITC) and the manufacturing 45X are tax credits, not grants, they stack with most federal grants but reduce the basis. Most DOE grant terms explicitly allow IRA stacking; check the cost-share rules on each call.
What stage do these programmes typically fund?▾
OCED targets first-of-a-kind commercial deployment (TRL 7–9). ARPA-E + OCED Innovation Hubs fund TRL 4–7. Earlier-stage applied research (TRL 2–4) sits at NSF, DOE Office of Science, and ARIA.

Who funds this and how
Storage funding is spread across more channels than most clean energy segments: research and innovation grants, capacity procurement, grid-services tenders, demonstration programmes and manufacturing incentives, each living on a different portal in a different format. It also crosses the grant-tender line more than most sectors; the same technology can win an innovation grant and a capacity tender in the same quarter, so run both filters, not one.
Grants and programmes. Research and innovation calls, demonstration funding and manufacturing incentives from government and foundation sources, in the energy storage grant hub.
Procurement. Where storage volume lives: capacity tenders and grid-services procurement across 44+ countries. For EU-facing teams, EU climate tenders covers that market's depth specifically.
Upstream signals. Announced grid and generation projects precede their storage procurement by quarters. Infrastructure project signals are their own filterable type on intel.
BD teams: the triage cadence in A BD workflow, start to finish maps onto storage directly. Adjacent segments worth watching from the same seat: grid modernisation and renewable energy, since storage demand trails both.
