Hydrogen & e-fuels funding
Grants, contracts, and offtake commitments for green hydrogen, electrolysers, ammonia, and synthetic fuels.
Hydrogen funding is dominated by sovereign deployment programmes, the EU Innovation Fund, the EU Hydrogen Bank, the US DOE Hydrogen Hubs, UK Hydrogen Allocation Rounds (HAR), and a thickening pipeline of national strategies in Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, and Korea. The capital required for first-of-a-kind electrolyser projects sits firmly in the public-money tier, with corporate offtake (ammonia, steel, shipping) starting to anchor commercial scale-up.
For earlier-stage technology, non-PEM electrolysers, e-fuel synthesis, hydrogen storage, the cheques come from ARIA, ARPA-E, UKRI, the EU Pathfinder, and Breakthrough Energy. E-fuels (e-SAF, e-methanol, e-ammonia) have a separate funding track: SAF programmes in the EU (ReFuelEU), UK (Advanced Fuels Fund), and US (SAF Grand Challenge) overlap with hydrogen calls but use different cost-share rules.

Frequently asked
Does my project need to be "green" hydrogen to qualify?▾
Most flagship programmes (EU Hydrogen Bank, UK HAR, DOE Clean Hydrogen) draw the line at a carbon-intensity threshold rather than a colour. The thresholds are tightening, under EU RFNBO rules a project must beat 3.38 kgCO₂e/kgH₂ to count as renewable. Blue hydrogen (CCS-coupled) is eligible for some US programmes but not most EU ones.
What's the easiest non-dilutive path for an electrolyser stack startup?▾
For pre-commercial stacks: ARPA-E + DOE Hydrogen Shot (US), UKRI Industrial Decarbonisation programmes (UK), EU Pathfinder (EU). For first commercial deployment, EIC Accelerator (€2.5M grant + equity) is the most common stepping stone before the larger Innovation Fund / Hydrogen Bank calls.
Are e-fuels (SAF, e-methanol) funded under the same programmes as hydrogen?▾
Sometimes yes, most Innovation Fund and DOE OCED calls include e-fuel pathways. But there are dedicated SAF programmes (UK Advanced Fuels Fund, US SAF Grand Challenge, EU ReFuelEU) that move faster for fuel-only plays. The biggest mistake is applying to a hydrogen call when your project is downstream of the electrolyser, go to the fuel call instead.
How do offtake contracts compare to grants for hydrogen producers?▾
Functionally they're larger and more predictable, H2Global (EU), Hintco auctions, and corporate offtake from steel/ammonia/shipping buyers can total billions per project. The trade-off is timelines (12–24 months from contract to delivery) and bankability, grants land cash earlier but offtake unlocks the project finance underneath.
