Renewable energy funding
Grants, contracts, and offtake commitments for solar, wind, geothermal, and other zero-carbon generation.
Renewable energy is the largest sustainability sector by funding volume, most public-sector climate spend flows here, directly (CfD auctions, IRA tax credits, EU Innovation Fund) or indirectly (grid, storage, transmission). For founders, the non-dilutive opportunities cluster in earlier-stage tech (next-gen PV, floating offshore, enhanced geothermal, perovskites) and in deployment-support for harder-to-finance projects.
The largest grant pots are EU Innovation Fund, US DOE OCED, UK Contracts for Difference (technically a price guarantee but functions as non-dilutive support), and a long tail of national R&D agencies. Foundation funding is smaller here than in adjacent sectors, once a technology hits commercial bankability, philanthropic capital tends to move on.

Frequently asked
Are CfDs and PPAs really "non-dilutive funding"?▾
Functionally yes, they de-risk revenue without taking equity, and are often the difference between a bankable project and a stuck one. We surface CfD auction rounds, PPA tenders from corporate buyers, and feed-in tariffs alongside straight grants because they all reduce capital cost.
What's the best early-stage funder for novel PV chemistries or wind designs?▾
ARPA-E (US, $1–5M typical), UKRI Future Energy Networks (UK, £500K–£3M), EU Pathfinder (€2–4M), and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst for later TRL. For hardware that's pre-revenue but commercially viable, the EIC Accelerator combines grant + equity in €0.5M–€2.5M cheques.
How do US IRA credits interact with federal grants?▾
Most IRA credits (45Y PTC, 48E ITC) stack with DOE grants but reduce the basis for the credit calculation. Manufacturing credits (45X) are direct-pay and don't reduce basis. Check the cost-share line on each call, IRA stacking sometimes counts against required matching funds.
Are there grants specifically for community-scale or off-grid renewables?▾
Yes, DOE Energy Communities programmes, US RUS, UK Rural Community Energy Fund, EU LIFE Climate, and most MDB rural-electrification windows. These cheques are smaller (typically £50K–£2M) but with lighter eligibility bars than utility-scale programmes.
