About this grant

The Andes-Amazon Initiative aims to ensure long-term conservation of the Amazon rainforest, Earth's largest remaining rainforest spanning eight countries and one territory. Since 2001, the Moore Foundation has helped conserve over 400 million hectares in the Amazon through this initiative. The Amazon provides one-fifth of the world's fresh water, is home to the planet's most diverse collection of birds, mammals, freshwater fish and plants, and its forests help mitigate global climate change. The initiative addresses significant threats including logging, hydrocarbon and infrastructure development, cattle ranching, soy farming, and mining, which have already resulted in the loss of nearly 20% of Amazonian forest cover. The initiative supports work by local and national governments, Indigenous communities, NGOs, and the private sector working independently and in partnership to conserve the forests. Over the past decade, sustainable management of indigenous lands and protected areas, as well as land-use policies, have dramatically slowed deforestation rates.
