About this grant

The Aquaculture Disinfectant Listing Scheme is a voluntary scheme run by Cefas on behalf of Defra. It lists disinfectant products that have been independently validated as effective against viral and bacterial diseases affecting freshwater fish. Any disinfectant manufacturer wishing to market a product in the UK may apply. The page publishes the current list of listed disinfectants with their effective dilutions under mandatory test conditions (4°C test temperature, 30 minute contact time), along with optional test data where supplied. To apply, a manufacturer must first have the product tested by a qualified laboratory using the modified EN 1656:2019 (bacterial) and EN 14675:2015 (viral) standards, with the laboratory working to a recognised international quality system and quality assurance checks carried out by an independent auditor. Products must also meet Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 and national biocides legislation. Applicants complete the Disinfectant Aquaculture Rate Card and the Aquaculture Disinfectant Listing Scheme Application Form. Applicants pay a per-product fee: £2,380 excluding VAT for a single-disease application, or £2,942 excluding VAT for a combined viral and bacterial application. Fees are non-refundable. Cefas acknowledges receipt within 5 working days, conducts a technical assessment, and notifies the outcome. Listings are valid for five years and must be renewed; amendments to add distributors are free of charge.
