About this grant
The Arctic Ocean Initiative supports productive and biodiverse ecosystems and sustainable fisheries in the Arctic Ocean. The initiative recognizes that the Arctic Ocean acts as an air conditioner for the planet and supports iconic ecosystems and wildlife found nowhere else, including all polar bears and narwhal, millions of migratory birds, over 200 fish species, and ancient creatures like the Greenland shark. The initiative addresses urgent environmental imperatives posed by warming air and sea temperatures, ocean acidification, sea ice loss, and increased interest in expanded fishing, shipping, and offshore development. With Arctic sea ice cover diminishing and predictions for relatively ice-free Arctic summers by mid-century, a new ocean basin is becoming available for industrial exploitation for the first time in modern human history. The initiative builds on more than 20 years of marine conservation grantmaking by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and aims to secure an abundant future for the Arctic Ocean by protecting essential habitats to support fish populations and ensure food security while mitigating major threats to Arctic waters. The initiative leverages Arctic countries' current readiness to advance conservation in their national waters and engage in international cooperation.
