About this grant
This programme supports the implementation and creation of new Protected Natural Areas (Unidades de Conservação) in Brazil to protect natural ecosystems and their species integrally. The foundation works on articulation for the creation and/or implementation of conservation units in priority areas contributing to water security and coastal-marine resilience. Protected areas provide critical ecosystem services including protection of water sources and springs, carbon sequestration, protection of endemic and threatened species, and prevention of landslides and natural disasters. The foundation focuses on unlocking and influencing the expansion of financial resources dedicated to the National System of Protected Areas, especially through the Environmental Compensation mechanism, to strengthen these areas. The work addresses Brazil's critical loss of natural vegetation, particularly in the Cerrado biome which lost 11,000 km² in 2023, and supports scientific research, environmental education, and sustainable tourism activities that generate social and economic benefits for local communities.
