About this grant
The GEF Small Grants Programme, established in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, provides financial and technical support to community-based projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people's well-being and livelihoods. The programme embodies the principle of 'thinking globally, acting locally' by demonstrating that community action can maintain the balance between human needs and environmental imperatives. SGP supports projects across multiple focal areas including biodiversity conservation and restoration, climate change mitigation and adaptation, land degradation, sustainable forest management, international waters, and chemicals management. The programme works in over 140 countries across Africa, Europe and the CIS, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, supporting capacity development, community empowerment and participation, poverty reduction, gender equality, indigenous peoples' engagement, and youth participation.
