ARIA is launching a programme within this space called Precision Mitochondria, backed by at least £55 million (approximately $68.75 million USD). This programme aims to make the mitochondrial genome programmable in vivo—addressing the fact that mitochondria have remained the last major genome that cannot be readily engineered. The immediate goal is to achieve persistent, reproducible expression of a novel gene from engineered mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in a vertebrate system, creating a foundational toolkit to transform mitochondrial biology. Potential applications of advances in bioenergetic engineering include treatments for neurodegenerative diseases and biohybrid solutions for environmental remediation and resilience.
