The Norwegian Human Rights Fund (NHRF) supports environmental rights work focused on protecting the common environment including land, forests, and strategic ecosystems. The fund recognizes that indigenous peoples and local communities depend on and co-live with forests and ecosystems, with their well-being typically bound to nature and territories. Indigenous and community environmental defenders face constant threats, persecutions, and murders for defending their territories, land, and forests against extractive companies, armed groups, and environmental degradation. The NHRF promotes the complex connection between indigenous and local communities' livelihoods, tenure rights, ways of living, knowledge systems, and biodiversity to strengthen both the conservation of nature and strategic ecosystems and the protection and promotion of human rights. The fund supports work addressing environmental human rights violations, including those related to the mining industry, and recognizes the voices of ethnic peoples and local communities in responding to the climate crisis.
