This grant funds consortia of NGOs implementing community-based projects across G5 Sahel countries, with a focus on local infrastructure, livelihoods, job creation, peace, and social cohesion over up to six years. It targets regional NGO partnerships working on economic development and community resilience in the Sahel.
About this grant
The Sahel Facility is a trust fund established in 2021 to finance community-based projects in the countries of the Sahel region. It addresses the challenges of high inequality, lack of opportunities especially for women and youth, and structural conditions of impoverishment and violence in the Sahel. The foundation works with national and international NGOs to build the capacity of local communities and promote peace, social cohesion, and prosperity. The grant program focuses on local infrastructures that improve livelihoods, leverage socio-economic potential, and create jobs in intervention areas. Projects must align with local development plans, but infrastructure choices are made through participatory and inclusive processes with broad community participation. Funding is provided in an agile manner to reflect the needs of local communities rather than based on pre-defined plans.

Eligibility
The Foundation works with national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that strive to build the capacity of local communities in the Sahel region. Eligible countries are members of the G5 Sahel. Projects must be in the peripheral and disadvantaged regions of G5 Sahel countries. The Foundation organizes one or more calls for proposals per year, each covering a specific region within the Sahel countries, and selects one consortium of NGOs per region.
How it's scored
Applications are evaluated through a sophisticated review process. The evaluation considers alignment with local development plans and the participatory nature of infrastructure selection. The process involves broad participation of the population and relevant authorities in determining which infrastructures to implement. An Advisory Board composed of regional experts advises on ensuring activities reflect regional needs and possibilities.
