About this grant
The Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPR) is a Japanese-funded grant facility administered by the Asian Development Bank. It originated as the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, established in May 2000 to provide grants for poverty reduction and social development activities that add value to projects financed by ADB. In 2010 the fund expanded to provide technical assistance grants alongside project grants. On 1 September 2021 ADB's Board approved renaming the fund to the JFPR to reflect the Government of Japan's announcement at ADB's 54th Annual Meeting in May 2021. The enhanced JFPR aims to help developing member countries achieve resilient recovery from the pandemic, strengthen preparedness for future crises, build a sustainable society, and bolster vulnerable groups. It seeks to lift remaining populations above the poverty threshold and place everyone on a sustainable path to prosperity and resilience. The fund's priority areas are universal health coverage, climate change and disaster risk management, quality infrastructure investment, and public finance management, in addition to poverty reduction. It prioritises sovereign project grants and technical assistance projects focused on these areas. As of 15 December 2021, about $966 million had been made available by Japan, and ADB had approved and signed $1.01 billion for 511 projects, comprising $612.4 million for 207 project grants and $400 million for 304 TA projects.

All ADB developing member countries are eligible to receive grants from the fund. Grants are channelled as sovereign project grants and technical assistance projects, so applications are made through ADB rather than directly by private or civil society organisations.
