About this grant
Buy an Acre is World Land Trust's longest-running programme that enables supporters to protect wildlife habitats by funding land purchases in threatened ecosystems around the world. The programme addresses habitat loss, the greatest threat facing wildlife worldwide, by supporting land purchase when opportunities arise in priority areas. Every £100 donated protects approximately one acre of land. Once purchased through this programme, land is owned and managed by local conservation partners who know the threats and wildlife best, ensuring permanent protection. After land acquisition, WLT partners take responsibility for long-term management and protection of the reserves, often employing local community members as rangers to provide day-to-day protection and prevent conversion to agriculture or other destructive uses. Current projects include protecting coastal forests in Kenya, expanding reserves in Uganda, protecting tropical rainforests in Ecuador, preserving renosterveld in South Africa, and protecting endemic species habitats on the Somuncurá Plateau and in the Dry Chaco forest of Argentina.
