Projects are typically implemented through local NGO partners via agency agreements, with occasional collaboration with peer international conservation organizations.
About this grant
The International Conservation Fund of Canada (operating as Biome) supports direct conservation action in tropical regions to reduce threats to species and ecosystems. The organization specializes in funding field projects that achieve lasting, ecologically sustainable conservation gains rather than research or sustainable development initiatives. Projects must have biodiversity conservation as a primary goal, involve local partner NGOs through independent contractor agreements, consider human interests especially of local communities, and operate at landscape scales of thousands to millions of hectares. The fund also supports in-country science capacity building when it yields longer-term conservation benefits. Good value is assessed considering vulnerability of species and ecosystems, connectivity and ecological sustainability, species richness, existing threats, and feasibility of cost-effective solutions.

Eligibility
Applicants must be local partner NGOs or organizations in tropical regions willing to work under independent contractor agreements (due to Canadian charity regulations preventing direct grants to foreign organizations). Projects must have biodiversity conservation as a primary goal, provide lasting ecologically sustainable conservation gains, take human interests into consideration with involvement and engagement of local communities, involve sizeable areas of thousands to millions of hectares, and must not have scientific research or sustainable development as primary purposes. Eligible habitats include terrestrial, wetland, freshwater, and marine ecosystems.
How it's scored
Projects are evaluated based on biodiversity conservation significance, the proposed solution and its feasibility, precise location and project area description, specific measurable objectives, planned actions and realistic timeframe, expected environmental and social co-benefits, risk assessment, budget and co-financing information, implementing party experience and credentials, and evidence of successful similar prior work or innovative approaches. Evaluators consider vulnerability of species and ecological communities, connectivity and ecological sustainability potential, species richness and overall biodiversity value, existing threats to be addressed, and cost-effectiveness of proposed actions.
