About this grant

The Thrive Grant funds initiatives outside the USA that accelerate alternatives to industrial animal agriculture, create plant-rich food systems, and increase access to or awareness of nutritious plant-based foods. The grant is geared toward mid-size or larger organizations with a demonstrated track record of success. Most Thrive Grants are directed to organizations that Thrive Philanthropy has previously funded. The foundation prioritizes organizations with budgets under $500,000 USD and encourages proposals led by or meaningfully employing women, people of color, and other marginalized persons. All funded organizations must align with Thrive Philanthropy's safespace policy and maintain a positive reputation with stakeholders and communities.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must be non-profit organizations (not for-profit companies) based outside the USA and not international chapters of US-based organizations. Proposals must aim to accelerate alternatives to industrial animal agriculture, create plant-rich food systems, or increase access to or awareness of nutritious plant-based foods. Organizations must consistently demonstrate a positive reputation with stakeholders and community, align with Thrive Philanthropy's safespace policy, and have a budget typically under $500,000 USD. For Africa-based applicants, organizations must either have received a previous Thrive grant or have been invited to apply; other Africa-based organizations are encouraged to participate in the Thrive Africa Accelerator instead. Individual applicants should apply for the Seed Grant instead. Ineligible projects include those benefiting animal exploitation, cellular agriculture initiatives, food aid to military or police, food banks or hunger relief, farmed animal welfare campaigns, animal farming, projects using animal products, political activities, gardening projects without larger strategy, tuition or university fees, and work within the USA or by US organization chapters.

How it's scored

Applications are evaluated based on alignment with Thrive Philanthropy's grantmaking approach and priorities. The foundation emphasizes equity as the centerpiece of giving, with particular encouragement for proposals led by or meaningfully employing women, people of color, and other marginalized persons. Evaluation considers organizational track record, demonstrated success, reputation with stakeholders and communities, and contribution to Thrive Philanthropy's positive reputation. Grants are limited and not all applicants will be awarded, with responses typically taking up to 8 weeks from the deadline.
