About this grant
Conservation X Labs (CXL) operates at the intersection of biodiversity, technology, and innovation to prevent a sixth mass extinction. One of its core strategic initiatives, 'Protect Wild Ecosystems Effectively,' addresses two of the most urgent threats to biodiversity and ecosystem health: invasive species and ineffective management of protected areas. On islands, invasive species introduced through human activities are responsible for 65% of global extinctions, posing existential threats to fragile ecosystems. Meanwhile, many protected areas suffer from inadequate resources, oversight, and enforcement, leading to biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and illegal activities such as poaching and deforestation. CXL's solution involves leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to neutralize invasive threats and improve protected area management. The organization aims to deploy scalable solutions that can help ensure effective protection of 30% of land and water by 2030, while combating active threats such as invasive species. CXL equips conservationists with tools and approaches that allow them to respond at the speed of the threats they face. CXL uses a combination of open innovation prizes and challenges, in-house invention, and field deployment to achieve its goals. It has completed 19 prizes and challenges, distributed over $12 million in funding to breakthrough solutions, and supported 165 game-changing innovations. Solutions in the field have contributed to expanding 325,000 hectares of protected areas and supporting over 32 effective area-based conservation measures.
