About this grant

The Andes-Amazon Initiative has helped conserve over 400 million hectares in the Amazon since 2001, an area more than 10 times the size of California. The initiative addresses the conservation of Earth's largest remaining rainforest, which spans eight countries and one territory from the eastern slopes of the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon provides one-fifth of the world's fresh water, is home to the planet's most diverse collection of birds, mammals, freshwater fish and plants, and helps mitigate global climate change. Nearly 20% of Amazonian forest cover has already been lost to logging, hydrocarbon and infrastructure development, cattle ranching, soy farming and mining. The initiative supports local and national governments, Indigenous communities, NGOs and the private sector working independently and in partnership to conserve the forests of the Amazon through sustainable management of indigenous lands and protected areas, as well as land-use policies. The goal is to secure the biodiversity and climate function of the Amazon basin by ensuring that 70% of the original forest cover remains standing, with a target outcome that by 2031, 70% of the Amazon biome and the freshwater ecosystems that sustain it will be under effective management and conservation.
