This Swedish Energy Agency call funds a coordinated, ten-year academic research environment on electricity market design and regulation, with the first five-year period (2027–2032) open for application. About this grant
Energimyndigheten (the Swedish Energy Agency) and Svenska kraftnät, with support from Energimarknadsinspektionen (the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate), are launching a targeted call to build up and strengthen a long-term academic research environment in electricity market design and regulation. The call aims to create and develop environments for research on electricity market design and regulation, promote international collaboration, and strengthen strategic cooperation between the agencies and academia. The intended outcome is stronger competence supply and knowledge building in the electricity market and power system. The research funded should have a clear system and societal economics focus and address central questions about market design and regulation in an expanding power system. These questions should be framed by new electrification user needs, increased digitalisation of the electricity system, and infrastructure investment for both modernisation and growing fossil-free electricity production and use. Funding supports establishing and running a coordinated research environment over a ten-year period. This call covers the first five-year period (2027–2032). Funding from the Agency and Svenska kraftnät may total up to SEK 15 million per year, and the applied-for support may cover up to 80 percent of the initiative's costs, so participating organisations must co-finance at least 20 percent. The call is part of the Agency's Framtidens elsystem (Future Electricity System) research programme. A sketch (skiss) must be submitted by 30 October 2026, with the full application period running from 1 December 2026 to 1 February 2027. Decisions are expected by May 2027, and projects may start as early as June 2027. An information meeting was held on 22 September 2026.

Eligibility
Applications are open to university-led groups of stakeholders who want to build a research environment for excellent, needs-driven research. The coordinating applicant (huvudsökande) must be a Swedish university (lärosäte) that collaborates with other universities and/or research institutes. Only Swedish universities and research institutes may receive funding from the Agency and Svenska kraftnät. Other organisations participating in the environment may be Swedish or foreign but cannot be applicants for funding. The application must include at least two universities. Co-financing of at least 20 percent of costs is required from participating organisations.
