About this grant
The Social Movements Fund is part of the Climate Justice Impact Fund for Africa (CJIFA) and provides innovative and rapid-response funding to support grassroots and independent movements and organizations addressing climate change and promoting climate justice across Africa. The fund specifically targets groups and organizations that face funding challenges and may not meet strict conventional requirements of traditional formal funding landscapes. This includes informal groups lacking registration, groups denied recognition documents due to their relationship with authorities, and disruptive organizations. The fund aims to support the "unfundables"—truly disruptive outfits shunned by mainstream donor institutions—to amplify the voices of communities at the frontline of the climate crisis and produce lasting change through collective activism of those who are structurally excluded, disempowered, exploited, or stigmatized.

Eligibility
Applicants must be grassroots and independent movements and organizations, which can be either registered or unregistered. Organizations do not need formal registration documents to apply. The fund is available in the following countries: Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Nigeria, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa. The fund specifically targets groups and organizations that face funding challenges and may not meet strict conventional requirements of traditional formal funding landscapes.
