About this grant

The Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) is a program operated by Verra, a nonprofit standards organization, that certifies and independently verifies the sustainable development impacts of projects aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program uses third-party expert auditors (Validation and Verification Bodies, or VVBs) to assess and confirm that a project genuinely advances the SDGs, providing credible, transparent documentation of social and environmental benefits. SD VISta addresses a critical gap in verified impact data: while trillions of dollars in investment are needed annually to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, reliable data on project outcomes is lacking. By independently verifying project claims, SD VISta enables businesses, governments, and investors to measure, track, and report the sustainable development benefits they have contributed to, protecting them against greenwashing accusations and increasing confidence among donors and investors. Projects certified under SD VISta can make verified claims about their sustainable development benefits, obtain SD VISta labels added to credits issued under other programs (such as Verra's Verified Carbon Standard), or generate SD VISta assets—standardized, transactable units representing quantified social or environmental benefits. The program applies to a broad range of project types including agriculture, forestry and other land use, ecosystem-based adaptation, energy efficiency, food security, health care, housing, clean cooking technologies, renewable energy, sustainable livelihoods, sustainable tourism, transportation, water access, and women's empowerment. Certification typically takes one to two years from planning to registration. Costs fall into three categories: Verra program fees, project development and operational fees, and auditing fees paid directly to the VVB. SD VISta is distinct from but complementary to Verra's Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards, which are restricted to agriculture, forestry, and land use projects, whereas SD VISta is open to any project type demonstrating contributions to the SDGs.

How it's scored

Projects are evaluated through independent third-party assessment by approved Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs). Assessments focus on transparent documentation of sustainable development benefits, adherence to human and natural capital safeguards, and alignment of project activities and monitoring with the UN SDGs' targets and indicators. Projects generating SD VISta assets must use an approved SD VISta asset methodology that quantifies specific social or environmental benefits and provides detailed procedures for establishing baseline scenarios, project boundaries, monitoring, and benefit quantification. The program does not publicly disclose specific scoring criteria or panel composition beyond the requirement for independent third-party verification.
