About this grant
BOLD (Biodiversity for Opportunities, Livelihoods and Development) is a 10-year project launched in 2021 and funded by the Government of Norway with USD 80 million. The project aims to strengthen food and nutrition security worldwide by supporting the conservation and use of crop diversity, building on the successful Crop Wild Relatives Project (2011-2021). BOLD is led by the Crop Trust and operates across 52 partner countries with support from 40+ genebanks. The project addresses the critical need to future-proof the world's food supply by conserving and using crop genetic diversity in the face of climate change and food security threats. BOLD works across five focus areas: capacity and resource development for 15 national genebanks in Africa, Asia and Latin America; making new crop diversity available through pre-breeding and evaluation work on seven key food and forage crops; developing genebanks and seed systems models in Bhutan, Ecuador, Tanzania and Uganda; providing technical and financial support to over 30 partners for safety duplication at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault; and supporting a new initiative called BOLDER (Building Opportunities for Lesser-known Diversity in Edible Resources) to enhance conservation and consumption of neglected and underutilized crops. The project also builds a sustainable community of practice for improved communication, outreach and knowledge exchange among partners.
