Summary
This grant funds pilot projects testing innovative bio-enabled and digital solutions for urban dengue vector control in Sri Lanka, with awards up to USD 450,000 per project. Eligible applicants include for-profits, nonprofits, research institutions, and CSOs seeking to validate scalable, cost-effective alternatives to conventional insecticide-based approaches.
About this grant
The Urban Dengue Control Innovation Challenge aims to identify, pilot, and validate bio-enabled and digitally-powered solutions for sustainable urban dengue control in Sri Lanka. Dengue fever is endemic in Sri Lanka with reported incidence between 300-400 cases per 100,000 population since 2009, three to four times the national target. Despite decades of investment in larviciding, spraying, and community clean-up campaigns, conventional vector management has failed to drive sustained reduction in dense urban environments, compounded by insecticide resistance and shifting climate patterns. Integrated vector management programs face challenges from limited human resources and the biological, operational, and environmental realities of high-density urban settings, while hospital systems face mounting costs from dengue caseloads. The challenge seeks a new generation of bio-enabled, data-driven, and scalable solutions to close the gap between public health effort and outcome. Proven impact in Sri Lanka is intended to become a replicable model for cities across Asia and the Pacific.
