About this grant

The Holohil Grant Program (HGP) provides Holohil wildlife tracking transmitters at reduced or no cost to research and conservation projects worldwide. For over 40 years, Holohil has supported endangered species research, primarily for bat and raptor studies, and the HGP (launched in 2016) extends this support to other underrepresented species. The program has awarded over $100,000 in transmitters globally. Each quarter, the program awards transmitters valued up to CAD$2,500 (approximately USD$1,875), with Holohil covering all shipping costs. The program accepts refurbished used units to expand support to additional worthy projects. Applicants must demonstrate that their project makes significant use of Holohil transmitters, advances scientific knowledge, contributes to conservation, engages or educates the public, and involves underrepresented study species of high research or conservation value. In return, winning applicants provide a one-page update report with photos for the Holohil website and acknowledge Holohil's support in presentations and publications.

Eligibility

The Holohil Grant Program is open to scientists and non-scientists from anywhere in the world, including conservation professionals and researchers globally. There are no restrictions on organization type, stage, or geographic location. Applicants must demonstrate that their project makes significant use of Holohil transmitters for data collection, aims to advance scientific knowledge, contributes to conservation, and ideally engages or educates the public. Projects involving underrepresented study species of high research or conservation value are particularly encouraged. Applicants may reapply in different quarters if not awarded, but are limited to one application per quarter per project, though the same Principal Investigator may apply once each quarter for each separate project they are involved in.

How it's scored

Applications are evaluated by an outside, impartial HGP Review Committee composed of skilled researchers and experienced conservation professionals, with guidance from Holohil staff experts on product appropriateness. The Review Committee assesses applications on multiple criteria: Need (transmitters essential to project success), Project Design (feasibility, timeframe, number of subjects, balanced design), Public Education (broad reach and youth involvement), Scientific Merit (potential for publication), Overall Scope (habitat protection and multi-species benefits), Project Potential (springboard for future research), Urgency (conservation status or understudied species), Popularity/Fundability (underrepresented species focus), Accessibility (remote locations or minimal current research areas), and Achievability (applicant expertise and collaborator capacity). Projects spanning both science and conservation education are rated more highly. Applications need not address every criterion to be successful.
