Biochar tenders

Biochar is charcoal made by heating biomass with little oxygen and then applied to soil or used in materials, where much of its carbon stays locked away for a long time. It is one of the most widely delivered forms of durable carbon removal, and public buyers are starting to tender around it: research into its effect on soils and crops, trials on public land and highway earthworks, supply of biochar for parks and tree planting, and inclusion of biochar in carbon removal purchase programmes.

Biochar notices tend to be precise about the material. Expect specifications on feedstock, production temperature, carbon content, contaminants and certification against a recognised biochar standard, and for removal purchases, the methodology used to calculate the permanent carbon fraction. Research and trial tenders ask for experimental design, monitoring periods and soil science expertise.

Biochar tenders are rare, so this page also shows recently closed ones. They indicate which public buyers are testing the material, and in which applications, before larger purchases follow.

Frequently asked

Why do public buyers tender biochar?

To test its effect on soils and plant growth, to use it in landscaping and earthworks, and increasingly to buy the carbon removal it provides.

What do biochar specifications include?

Feedstock, production conditions, carbon content, limits on contaminants, certification against a biochar standard and, for removal purchases, the method used to calculate permanence.

Are biochar removal credits covered?

Yes, where a notice names biochar. Wider carbon removal purchases that list several methods appear on the carbon removal page.
