About this grant
The Atmosphere Cluster (AC) in the Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) supports fundamental studies of atmospheric processes from the Earth's surface to the stratosphere, across timescales ranging from nanoseconds to millennia. The program funds research on chemical, physical, and dynamical processes in the atmosphere that impact clouds, weather, climate, air quality, and the water cycle. Research methods include modeling, collecting observations, conducting experiments in the laboratory and field, and advancing analytical measurement techniques. Core research areas include chemical processes and mechanisms explaining how atmospheric gases and aerosols form and interact; processes and dynamics governing climate and hydroclimate including coupled atmosphere-ocean and land-atmosphere interactions; observational and modeling studies of past climate and paleoclimate proxies; physics and dynamics of atmospheric motions on all scales from planetary to microscale; physical meteorology including aerosol, cloud, precipitation physics and atmospheric electricity; and synoptic and mesoscale meteorology including severe and hazardous weather processes. AGS encourages proposers to integrate education, outreach and dissemination activities, workforce development, open science initiatives, and efforts to broaden participation in atmospheric and geospace sciences.

Eligibility
Unrestricted eligibility - open to any type of entity. NSF encourages proposals from all institutions, including Minority Serving Institutions, Emerging Research Institutions, and institutions in Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) jurisdictions. Proposals must comply with the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG).

Applications are evaluated according to NSF Merit Review criteria, which include Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts. The Broader Impacts criterion specifically requires integration of education, outreach and dissemination activities into research plans. Proposals are reviewed for compliance with PAPPG guidelines; non-compliant proposals are returned without review.
