About this grant

The Battery Energy Storage System Grant from SEAI supports homeowners in installing home battery storage systems. Battery storage allows electricity to be stored for later use, improving energy flexibility and helping to lower electricity costs. The grant is a flat rate of €600 for systems of 5 kWh or larger; smaller batteries are not eligible. Where a household is installing both solar PV and a battery, both grants can be applied for through a single application. Homeowners with an existing solar PV application may submit a new application for the battery grant without amending the existing one. Applications cannot be accepted for installations that have already started, and a Grant Offer must be received before installation begins. The grant requires use of an SEAI registered contractor, an installer application to ESB Networks for grid connection, and a post-works BER assessment by a registered SEAI BER Assessor where solar PV is present. Applicants have 8 months from grant approval to complete works and submit the Declaration of Works, after which the grant expires. Payment is typically processed within 4 to 6 weeks of submitted documentation.

About this sector

Energy storage funding spans batteries, long-duration storage, thermal storage and the controls that dispatch them. Research calls focus on chemistry and system cost. Demonstration programmes test grid services, while tenders buy capacity, flexibility and installation contracts. Buyers usually want evidence of safety certification, round-trip efficiency and a credible route to grid connection.
