About this grant
The Food Futures Research Program is a partnership between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. It seeks to identify and support strategic agricultural research with a potential breakthrough or transformative impact on global food security in the near future. ACIAR and IDRC have jointly committed A$5 million to the program, which ACIAR manages on behalf of the partnership. The program has undertaken foresight and impact analysis to understand macro and sector trends in food security and to identify major future obstacles and key research gaps. During 2020–21 it planned to design and commission innovative agricultural research addressing these obstacles, aiming to deliver a sustainable and food- and nutrition-secure future. A specific research focus is reducing food loss in low- and lower-middle-income country value chains. The program draws on the 2019 XPRIZE Future of Food Impact Roadmap, produced in partnership with ACIAR, IDRC and the Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research, which highlights food loss and waste as a priority action area. The page also describes the related Food Loss Research Program, launched by ACIAR and IDRC in June 2021, which works with partners in developing countries on locally driven solutions and seeks to understand the systemic drivers of food loss.
