About this grant
The John Paul II Foundation for the Sahel was established by Pope John Paul II following his first visit to Africa, in response to the severe drought and desertification affecting Sahel region populations. The Foundation supports formation and capacity-building projects across nine countries: Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, and Chad. The Foundation concerns itself with the formation of animators, health workers, hydraulic engineers, civil engineers, mechanics, agriculturists, animal husbandry specialists, and forestry professionals. A unique characteristic is its openness to the different religions of the inhabitants, serving as an instrument of inter-religious dialogue. The Foundation operates through the Episcopal Conferences of the nine Sahel countries, with the legal seat and fund management retained by the Pontifical Council Cor Unum in Vatican City, while operational execution is conducted by the General Secretariat in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. From 2005 to 2009, the Foundation funded 996 formation projects across sectors including animation (27.1%), agriculture (14.75%), water management (13.25%), animal raising (10.04%), and environment (10.64%).
