About this grant
FY7: Assessing woodland condition is a capital grant item that provides funding to help woodland owners complete condition assessments of their woodlands. The grant supports the identification of woodland features that benefit wildlife, are in good ecological condition, or would benefit from improvement. It also helps identify threats to woodlands such as invasive species or tree diseases, enabling early action to reduce negative effects. Applicants can choose between following the Forestry Commission's Operations note 69 or using the Sylva woodland condition assessment tool. The assessment must include 15 indicators and produce a condition score that classifies woodland as good, moderate, or poor ecological condition. This item is part of the Higher Tier Capital Grants 2026 programme and can be used to create baseline assessments for new woodland management plans, assess woodland under Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier agreements, or determine eligibility for Woodland Tree Health grants.
