TE11: Tree surgery is a capital grant item under Natural England's Countryside Stewardship scheme that funds tree surgery work on mature, fully grown trees. The grant maintains and enhances landscape character by managing and restoring mature trees, prolonging their lives, and maintaining their wildlife and historic value. Eligible work includes cutting limbs up to and over 20 centimetres in diameter, with payments made per tree at different rates depending on limb diameter. Tree surgery must be carried out between 1 September and the end of February, and applicants must control competing weeds, remove cut material, and check for nesting birds and roosting bats before work begins. For limbs over 20cm diameter, a written assessment from a qualified arboricultural expert or Forestry Commission adviser is required that outlines the intended outcome and explains how long-term health and viability of the trees will be maintained.

Eligibility
Applicants must be holders of a Countryside Stewardship agreement or applying for Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier. Tree surgery can only be used on mature, fully grown trees and cannot be used on bush orchards (intensively managed top fruit crops including apples, pears, cherries and plums on non-vigorous rootstocks). Work is geographically restricted to areas where Countryside Stewardship is available in England. Applicants must comply with all consents and permissions including Tree Preservation Orders, Conservation Orders, and licences from Natural England for work on old trees.
