About this grant

The Heat Pump System grant is an individual home energy upgrade grant offered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) under the Better Energy Homes programme. It provides financial support to homeowners and eligible property owners who wish to install a new, energy-efficient heat pump to replace their existing heating system. Heat pumps are renewable heating systems that offer consistent comfort and reduced carbon emissions, and they require a well-insulated home to operate efficiently. As of 3rd February 2026, the grant was significantly increased and now consists of a bundle of three components: up to €6,500 for the heat pump unit itself, up to €2,000 for required upgrades to central heating components such as new radiators or underfloor heating, and a €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus grant for homeowners replacing an existing oil/gas boiler, solid fuel heating system, or electric storage heating system. The total grant available is up to €12,500 depending on dwelling type (apartments are capped at €9,500 for most heat pump types). A separate €200 grant is available for a technical assessment of heat loss, and a €50 grant is available for a post-works BER assessment. Applicants must use an SEAI registered contractor and obtain grant approval before works begin. The process involves applying online or by post, completing the works within eight months of the grant offer, obtaining a post-works BER assessment, and submitting all required documentation to SEAI. Grants are paid directly into the applicant's nominated bank account, typically within 4 to 6 weeks of receiving completed paperwork. Alternatively, applicants can use a One Stop Shop service, which manages the full upgrade process and deducts the grant upfront from the cost of works.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include owner occupiers, companies including owner management companies, registered charities, holiday homes, Approved Housing Bodies (AHB), and private and commercial landlords of tenanted properties. The property must have a Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) and must have been built and occupied before 2021. For homes built before 2007, a technical assessment is required unless a valid BER certificate confirms a Heat Loss Indicator of 2.3 W/(K.m²) or less. For homes built from 2007 onwards, a Self-Declaration Form may be submitted instead. Homeowners replacing an existing heat pump that was not previously grant-aided under any SEAI domestic scheme may apply, but their maximum grant is limited to €6,500 (€4,500 for apartments) and they are not eligible for the Renewable Heat Bonus or Central Heating grants. Applicants must use an SEAI registered contractor.

How it's scored
