About this grant
The John Paul II Foundation for the Sahel is a pontifical initiative established by Pope John Paul II to address the long-term drought, desertification, and poverty affecting people in the Sahel region of Africa. The Foundation was created following the Pope's first visit to Africa in 1980 and operates under the governance of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum" with day-to-day operations managed through an Administrative Council composed of bishops from nine Sahel nations. The Foundation funds both formation projects (training and capacity building) and implementation projects (on-the-ground development initiatives) across nine countries: Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, and Chad. From 2005 to 2009, the Foundation funded 996 total projects with implementation projects accounting for approximately 7.67 million USD. The Foundation concerns itself with the formation of animators, health workers, hydraulic engineers, civil engineers, mechanics, agriculturists, animal husbandry specialists, and forestry professionals. A unique characteristic is its openness to the different religions of the inhabitants, serving as an instrument of inter-religious dialogue while maintaining a commitment to local African leadership and ecclesial communion.

Eligibility
Implementation projects must be located in one of nine Sahel countries: Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, or Chad. Projects are overseen and approved by the Episcopal Conferences of these nations, reflecting a decentralized governance model where bishops and local church leadership play a primary role in project selection and administration.
