About this grant

The M-ERA.NET 2026/27 call (edition 2027 for the ANR) is a transnational R&D funding call for advanced materials research and innovation, supporting the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. More than 30 funding agencies participate. The call spans from fundamental research through to industrial application and emphasises new materials, product and process integration, energy efficiency, resource use and the circular economy. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to societal and technological challenges, and treats advanced materials as key enabling technologies that can contribute to the EU Strategic Energy Technology (SET) plan. The call has six thematic areas. For French applicants requesting ANR funding, four are eligible: materials for energy storage and distribution systems, materials for energy conversion, innovative functional materials with defined architectures, and next-generation materials for electronics. Surfaces, coatings and interfaces, and materials for environmental challenges are not eligible for ANR funding. Projects are transnational consortia. Each partner is funded by its own national or regional agency or ministry, so national eligibility rules apply in addition to the call rules. Proposals and pre-proposals are written in English and submitted centrally through the M-ERA.NET submission platform by the project coordinator. Only coordinators of pre-proposals selected at the first stage may submit a full proposal. Where at least one partner requests ANR aid, the full proposal must also be lodged on the ANR submission site, with details to be communicated to candidates later. The pre-proposal deadline is 12 May 2026 at 12:00 CEST, and the full project deadline is 18 November 2026 at 12:00 CET. The call opened on 31 March 2026. Materipedia, a database of previously funded projects, along with success stories and a partner search tool, is available to help build consortia.

Eligibility

Open to academic and industrial research partners forming transnational consortia under M-ERA.NET. Partners requesting ANR funding must be eligible under the ANR participation rules set out in the document 'Modalités de participation pour les partenaires sollicitant une aide de l'ANR', and their projects must fall within one of the four ANR-eligible themes. Surfaces, coatings and interfaces, and materials for environmental challenges are not eligible for ANR funding. Proposals must be written in English and submitted by the project coordinator. Partners are funded by their own national or regional agencies, so those agencies' eligibility rules also apply. No restriction on prior recipients is stated on the page.

How it's scored

Evaluation is conducted centrally by M-ERA.NET in two stages. Pre-proposals are assessed first, and only selected coordinators are invited to submit full proposals. The page does not give scoring criteria, weightings or panel composition. Candidates are directed to the call's Guide for Proposers for the evaluation details.

About this sector

Energy storage funding spans batteries, long-duration storage, thermal storage and the controls that dispatch them. Research calls focus on chemistry and system cost. Demonstration programmes test grid services, while tenders buy capacity, flexibility and installation contracts. Buyers usually want evidence of safety certification, round-trip efficiency and a credible route to grid connection.
