About this grant

The National Forest for Wales Landscape Scheme, funded by Welsh Government and managed by WCVA, supports innovative landscape-scale forestry projects across Wales. Following a successful pilot, the scheme continues to work collaboratively across multiple landowners to create and improve forests while realizing economic, community, biodiversity, and recreational benefits. Projects must be collaborative at landscape scale and meet all six National Forest for Wales outcomes: good quality, well-designed and managed resilient woodlands; woodlands accessible to people; community involvement in woodlands; connected woodlands; dynamic, multi-purpose woodlands and trees; and woodlands that demonstrate learning, research and innovation. The fund supports activities including community engagement for young people and vulnerable adults, improving woodland access through infrastructure repairs, providing training in traditional woodland skills such as coppicing and tree planting, processing timber for sustainable economic opportunities, and connecting woodlands and habitats for biodiversity enhancement and broader community engagement.

Eligibility

Organisations in Wales working in collaboration with their Local Nature Partnership can access the scheme. Applications should demonstrate being rooted in the needs of their place and the impact trees can have for their community or locality. Strong community engagement is required, offering opportunities for deprived communities to access woodland and nature, and creating local, sustainable economic opportunities in rural areas. Projects should deliver against wider forestry policy objectives including tree planting, improved access and connectivity, skills development, and economic value of woodland. Projects should support broader community engagement through education, skill development and volunteering opportunities, and ideally showcase innovative approaches to woodland and landscape management or pilot new practices.

How it's scored

Applications are evaluated on how well they demonstrate the six National Forest for Wales outcomes and reflect the eligibility criteria. Each participant can focus on individual outcomes if required, but the project as a whole should meet all outcomes. Evaluation considers alignment with place-based needs, level of community engagement particularly for deprived communities, contribution to sustainable economic opportunities, delivery against forestry policy objectives, broader community engagement and education opportunities, and innovation in woodland management approaches.
