About this grant
Seeds for Resilience is a five-year project (start year 2019) run by the Crop Trust to support the national genebanks of Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia. The project addresses the combined threats of climate change, degraded agricultural land and population growth facing sub-Saharan African farmers, as well as the loss of crop diversity and the at-risk state of national genebank collections, which have suffered from insufficient staffing and low funding. The project provides financial and technical support to bring the five national genebanks up to international standards so their collections are safe and widely available over the long term. Planned activities include upgrading genebank equipment, improving internal processes, increasing staff technical capacity, ensuring collections are safely backed up, documenting seed sample data, and sharing samples under agreed international rules. The work is user-driven, prioritising seeds most useful to farmers and researchers. Thousands of plant samples are to be shared through participatory trials in which farmers can select varieties suited to local conditions. Partner genebanks include the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute, KALRO's GeRRI, NACGRAB in Nigeria, the Zambia Agricultural Research Institute's NPGRC, and CSIR-PGRRI in Ghana. The project is supported by the Federal Government of Germany (BMZ) through KfW.
