Germany sustainability funding, October 2026 roundup

By Andrew Holden

Germany's open sustainability funding this month is thin on grants and heavier on procurement. Nearly every grant in the data is either general research, culture or education funding with no climate requirement, or a European R&D call that happens to include German applicants. The tenders are where the sector-relevant work sits: municipal and state buyers procuring flood protection, photovoltaics, water infrastructure and building services.

A caveat before the lists. Most of the grants below are not climate programmes, and we flag where the fit is weak so you don't spend an afternoon on an ineligible call. The tenders are mostly German-language, local in scale, and several close on 19 October, so the window for those is short.

Grants

Only a few of these are plausible for a climate or energy-transition founder. The rest are listed so you can rule them out quickly.

Calls with some commercial or R&D fit

  • Eureka Network: 5th Innowwide call for market feasibility projects, Autumn 2026. Deadline: 1 December 2026. Amount: €60K to €4.2M. Open to SMEs from EU member states, Iceland, Israel, Norway, Switzerland, Türkiye and the UK, funding market feasibility studies for products or services aimed at emerging markets in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The listing states up to €60,000 in grant funding per project, so treat the upper figure in the range with caution and check the call text.
  • Eureka Network: CELTIC-NEXT call for projects, Autumn 2026. Deadline: 26 October 2026. Amount not specified. A collaborative R&D call focused on ICT and related sectors, funding consortia. It is relevant only if your product is digital infrastructure for energy or grid applications.
  • Eureka Network: ITEA call for projects 2026. Deadline: 2 November 2026. Amount not specified. Also ICT-focused collaborative R&D, open to consortia from 24 eligible countries and regions.
  • European Commission (EC): Video Game and Immersive Content Development. Deadline: 1 November 2026. Amount: up to €10.0M. This call does not require climate or sustainability outcomes. It only matters if you build climate-communication or educational content.

Regional and foundation funding, mostly off-topic

  • Gelsenwasser Foundation: From an Early Age. Deadline: 22 October 2026. Amount: see listing. Education projects at kindergartens and schools. Not climate-focused.
  • Schöck-Familien-Stiftung charitable GmbH (SFS): Social Projects Germany. Deadline: 31 October 2026. Amount: up to $55,000. Socio-pedagogical care and integration in Baden-Württemberg. New partnerships are rarely accepted.
  • Archaeological Institute of America (AIA): C. Brian Rose AIA/DAI Exchange Fellowships. Deadline: 1 November 2026. Amount: see listing. Archaeology exchange fellowships.
  • Ingrid zu Solms Foundation: Prices for Human Rights as well as Art and Culture. Deadline: 7 November 2026. Amount: see listing. An awards programme, not a funding call.
  • Saxony-Anhalt Art Foundation: Arbeitsstipendien (Work Stipends). Deadline: 9 November 2026. Amount: up to $20,250. Stipends for individual artists resident in Saxony-Anhalt.
  • International Journalists' Programmes (IJP): German-Northern European Fellowship. Deadline: 15 November 2026. Amount: see listing. Journalist exchange, not a climate intervention.

Government contracts

All eight tenders below close on 19 October 2026. Only one carries a published value. Documents are likely in German, so check language requirements and any local registration before committing.

What's missing

There is no national climate or energy-transition grant in this set, and nothing from a federal agency. There is no adaptation or decarbonisation grant for startups or nonprofits either, and the only grant-style route for a small climate company is the Innowwide feasibility call. The tenders are almost all construction, engineering and installation work from municipal and state buyers, which favours established contractors over early-stage teams. Most carry no published value, and the one that does is modest.

Use this in Raise Lens

  1. Open /tenders and filter by country (Germany) and by sector (renewable energy, water, climate adaptation) to isolate the work that fits your capability.
  2. Sort by closing date, since several tenders share a 19 October deadline, and discard anything you cannot staff or register for in time.
  3. Save a search for Germany with your sectors and switch on alerts, so new grants and tenders reach you rather than relying on a monthly roundup.
  4. Add the Eureka Network to your Watchlist on /funders, then use /draft to produce a first-pass Innowwide application you can refine.

Next month's picture will depend on what the federal and state agencies publish, so it is worth setting up alerts now. Browse everything currently open at /opportunities.
