About this grant

SAIS (Scaling digital Agriculture Innovations through Start-ups) is a company development and accelerator programme for African tech start-ups in the agriculture, food, and livestock sectors. It is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The programme addresses the 'missing middle' that prevents innovative agtech ideas from reaching investment-ready scale, positioning start-ups as a central pathway to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. Start-ups admitted to a SAIS Investment Readiness Programme (IRP) receive tailor-made services designed to make them investment ready. The programme begins each cohort with an annual community gathering called the SAIStival, held in Nairobi, which marks the start of the IRP. The most recent cohort (Cohort 2026) included 12 new start-ups from nine countries. Alongside the flagship IRPs, SAIS runs a dedicated support stream for livestock tech start-ups from Africa, addressing animal agriculture challenges. The page reports that across the portfolio over 100 start-ups have been supported, around 65% have raised follow-on funding after completing the programme, and more than 94% remain in the market.
